I got a full-face spandex hood that stretches to cover your head and it breathes well. I find that if something is right up close to your face, like on the skin, you can breathe right through it.
I also made a square of fabric from an old black t-shirt and made it tie on the top and bottom. I tie the top around my head tightly and the bottom very loosely around my neck. This leaves it almost completely open on the chin and a little on the sides.
You can also get a kind of stiffer fabric and use ear loops, but create sort of a tunnel running from cheek to cheek for ventilation. It will essentially pop-up like a tent around your nose and mouth to be left open on the sides.
I suppose gauze might work?
EDIT: oh yeah, get some wire and use it to shape parts of the cloth away from your face. A hanger might do fine.
