I don't know the story. But I will say that I know that Buffet, and others like him, are known to hold debt with "strings attached."
These strings allow the debt holder to control a lot more than a typical lender.
So, just because he is a lender, does not mean he has no control. He might not (or he might). You can't know for sure just based on the fact that it is debt and not equity.
With people like this, the "normal scenario" is usually not standard operating procedure for them.

PS: He issued debt to Goldman Sachs during the big financial meltdown, and that allowed him a lot of control of the company (not full control, of course, but he got one of his guys on the BOD, for example), and then when the stock price went up, the debt was converted to equity. These guys play much more sophisticated games than Mom and Pop at the corner grocery.
He doesn’t need to attach strings. The Lee papers are understaffed leftist rags who follow the likes of the AP. There is very little actual local news anymore.
