What's wrong is that the state shouldn't be able to dictate a person's belief system. You can't force a person to believe in a particular religion. If you do, then it's only a show, not a heartfelt connection to a higher being.
Where does the state dictate anyone's belief system? Has the state ever tried to force you to believe in a particular higher power? No that would be Islam, a theocracy. Think Sharia law or the Church of England when we fought for independence. That's why the constitution forbid the state from making laws respecting a religion. We were formed as a Judo-Christian country but the founders knew not to give the state the power to enforce a religion. That's far different from "separation of church and state". Like I said you can find that term in the old Soviet Constitution and in the The Communist Manifesto.
The 1st Amendment explicitly states: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. It's pretty simple, doesn't take a lawyer to understand. The state can't promote (respect) one religion over another. The colonies had just freed themselves from England which was a theocracy.
"It is true that the phrase "separation of church and state" does not actually appear anywhere in the Constitution of the United States. There is a problem, however, in that some people draw incorrect conclusions from this fact. The absence of this phrase does not mean that it is an invalid concept or that it cannot be used as a legal or judicial principle."
