We did plenty of hand laid gold leaf..artisans..a skill lost now.

100 percent agree. It looks like a journal / date book / record book. I'd guess gilded edges for him because 'austerity does not work with 45' usually. And it will be in his POTUS library someday..
When I finished my MS thesis in 1983, I had some old bookbinder make three copies for me. He was an immigrant right after WWII and he got a job with the Federal Government at National Archives?, not sure of the details, but he either learned there, or was hired because he already knew. He did an awesome job with the binding! It is probably very difficult to find anyone who could do this today.
