Nope, they were pretty solid Christians and indicated as such in their writings.
Atheist != deist.
Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and a bunch more. They were deist not theists. Like you say, it is evident in their writing.
The way you responded tells me you don’t know what a deist is.
You're not wrong about what deism is, but George Washington and many others that have been changed by modern, liberal institutions to be deists were not deists. Especially George Washington, he believed in God, Jesus, and miracles. He even claimed to have been the subject of a miracle where he had bullet holes in his shirt during a battle and his body was not struck by a single bullet.
I don't know how literal I believe all of Genesis is because it is one of the books most removed from its source at the time of writing and could have been a non-scientific (not a lot of scientific methodology back then), explanation of creation.
You will have to show sources that say they self-proclaimed themselves as deists or clearly and obviously rejected not only Jesus, but the Bible and or all miracles or you shouldn't be parroting liberal propaganda created by revisionist historians. Your discourse and viewpoint/beliefs are welcome and valuable but this is a sore point because liberal institutions are trying to hijack our history and lie about our founders. I've heard Franklin, Jefferson, and others were deist but I really don't know if they were, but Washington was nilot a deist.
If only it was that easy. It not like they went around bragging about being deist.
See the part I quoted in your statement? That’s not what I said, which again tells me that your not fully understanding what Is being said.
Lmao. I’m not gonna waste my time defending such a stupid statement. Your commented started out decent but then you went all liberal on me, asking for a specific quote that doesn’t exist and insulting my intelligence.
Then learn your history. I was fortunate enough to grow up long before common core was a thing, were you?
I was homschooled so no common core, but all my friends who had common core believe that all of our forefathers were either atheist or deist and were all racists.
You said in several comments in this post that as a deist you believe in God but not miracles or the Bible, maybe deists don't reject Jesus as a person, but my understanding from your comments and from other self-proclaimed deists I know is that Jesus is not the Messiah.
You have been insulting a lot of people's intelligence on this post so don't give me that about me insulting your intelligence, what a copout. You also said I'm acting like a liberal asking for a specific quote? When you have made specific claims with zero evidence besides telling us to "learn our history"? Okay John Oliver, yeah, we'll just go Google it and when we again find absence of proof, you can insult our intelligence because you know everything but can't even give one damn quote or source.
"you clearly don't understand", "learn your history", "I'm not gonna waste my time" (proceeds to waste your time roasting me instead of engaging me intelligently).
If you said you think they were deists because of X, great, but you said specific people WERE deists and when challenged, you say they didn't go around bragging about being deists, but instead of trying to give one solid thesis based on a source of any kind, you just act offended that we don't trust the vast history of an individual on an internet message board. Facts, solid arguments with some source, or get the fuck out of here.
If you believe in God/Jesus you are Christian. You don't have to belong to a particular denomination. They invoke God oftentimes in their writing, ergo they were Christians.
I believe in god but I reject the Bible. That is the key difference. I am not a Christian.
Deist don’t believe in resurrection or miracles. We use observation and logic.
It is not a denomination like Pentecostal or catholic. It’s its own thing.
If you're going to reject the Bible then you might as well reject *God. I don't really see how you CAN believe in God in the absence of the Bible.
