As we’re approaching the time for the next wave of Marxist-engineered riots, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is preparing to sign a new law into place imposing stricter penalties on rioters and destruction as well as curtailing bad behavior from (the corrupt blue-city) local leaders by holding them accountable if they try to reduce funding for police or inhibit the police from their riot-control activities.
Commentary... “Aside from the enhanced criminal penalties for acts of violence during a riot, the bill contains a measure requiring state approval for any change to a municipal budget that would reduce funding for police. The clause was a response to calls to “defund the police” after the death of George Floyd last May. HB 1 institutes a felony charge for the destruction of a memorial, flag or other historical structure. It would also hold local governments civilly liable if they interfere with law enforcement efforts to respond to riots.”
And a final excerpt from the article, this with respect to the rioters, brings up the refreshing concept of accountability...
“DeSantis said in September, “These are people that will come from all across the country. If there’s any type of issue, they all of a sudden show up in all these places.”
“We’re gonna figure out who’s organizing and who’s funding that and hold them accountable,” he concluded.”
How is it we need new legislation for this? Dont the laws already exist, but just arent enforced?
Making penalties more severe for damage during riots and making the burning of a flag a felony, as examples, would increase jail time and perhaps the amounts of the (financial) fines. I haven’t read the bill itself yet, just the article.
Then, creating disincentives for local leaders (almost always blue/democrat-run cities) to screw with police being able to do their jobs are the biggest changes I can discern. Before, if the mayor and/or city council decreed that police in their city couldn’t use tear gas, for example, that tool was removed from police force’s arsenal for riot control. If I’m reading this right, as an example, a business owner could sue the mayor and council members for damage incurred if it could have been avoided by letting police do their job of riot control as had best fit the situation versus the mayor/council people dictating to the police what they can and cannot do. (Some legal anons can weigh in if this is off base).
In regards to financial penalties, I've always been fond of this idea: get caught rioting while receiving welfare, lose your welfare. I can see Florida making this happen. Oregon or Washington State, not so much.
