The movie's been complete for quite a while, they just need to find someone who is willing to distribute and market the film. Due to the subject matter, no one in hollywood would want to release it.
They filmed it back in 2018, and normally a film takes 6-12 months of post-production and editing to complete. Sometimes even longer, depending on the film and the nature of it. It should've been released by now, so the fact that Caviezel is not even certain about a Q4 2021 release is really quite saddening. It could be 2022 before we ever see this film, and that will have been quite a while after they filmed it. If enough people demand for it to be released and the film studios think they can make money from it, they will be more incentivized to release it. Just like with Passion of the Christ back in 2004.
I suppose they could, though I'm not sure why they're not going that route. I don't see what's stopping them. Unless the streaming services don't want it either?
This is what the main actor (Jim Caviezel) said in a recent interview. They're trying to get someone to distribute the film because it's a touchy subject and no one in hollywood wants to touch it.

Interesting. I did not know that.

Dang that's crazy. Can they not just release it for online streaming like so many films did during the lockdowns?
