Most people feeling a need to make bold claims like this do so to reassure themselves more than anything else and as such they haven't really done much work on finding anything to support them, which it is the very reason they issue such challenges(hoping that people will back down and not push back)

Fairly common human psychology, you also see it in loudmouths, bully's and several other types of people/situations...
