I think it goes far beyond that. Maddow is an MK Ultra lifer and formerly, VERY GOOD at being a pathological liar.

When the lies are no longer believed but she must go on telling them, her confidence is shattered. Notice how her hand gestures and body language have become frantic, almost manic. She's doing this because the words have stopped working.
