I've heard other Puerto Ricans and Puerto Rican descendants say something similar. Now, if she were Dominican or Black Cuban and said this, I'd half agree. Ive be n told by those Puerto Ricans that it has to do with the original island inhabitants, the Taino (tah-ee-no) were dark skinned, and that P.R. was an outpost for the Spaniards along the slave trade routes. But I've met actual Taino's and they're not black, just super dark skinned.
The actual Black Hispanics are the former Africans that were left on Dominica and the Cuba after the Spaniards left after the Spanish-American War. But, they don't call themselves Black, either.
Whats funny is in their country based on their 2016 census 75% identify as white. It was 64% white 1900s 27% mixed it seems 13% of the mixed or more want to be white. But they all come here and say theyre not white.
