It's not that people don't know that.

It is though. Maybe you and I know this, but I bet if you asked 100 random Americans what the difference is between a bison and a buffalo, you wouldn't get 25 correct answers.

When I wrote 'And people are free to call bison "buffaloes" if they want. It's so common, it's become literally acceptable to use in place of bison,' that was making your point about common usage.
