Saw an elderly lady without a mask while shopping today; gave her a big smile and said how nice it was to see another face. She cried "Oh no - I forgot!" and rummaged for her face diaper looking flustered, scared and ashamed. Groan.

Happened to me too. Just think, if they managed to get through the entire shopping errand without the mask (or the fact nobody said anything to them), it would have been a small red pill once they realized it... breaking the control over them.
Now when I see somebody without a mask, I only nod at them if they make eye contact, otherwise I don't say anything.
I will do the same :)
Yeah. Don't make more than that much of a deal out of it. No mask is the normal and even though OPs intentions were good, in reality they just reinforced the "new normal" standards.
Don't validate the mask at all if you can avoid it.
I wear my mask under my nose in the grocery store and nobody says boo. I also never see a maskless person in the stores. Never.
