Masons, Odd Fellow and other similar organizations are like an intake and testing mechanism for new DS members.

They start by finding out who will follow strange and bizarre rules and rituals to advance themselves and who will keep quite about it, it starts light and then just progresses in the order with things getting more and more fucked up and peoples connections and opportunities outside of the order following suit.

Above a certain level of having proven themselves they start to get more involved in the kind of shit that is currently being actively fought behind the scenes.

Most members that are in a lodge, the masons or what not are so low level as to be a non issue as they haven't really done anything wrong yet, however when this shit gets out they will not have a fun time due to peoples reactions towards them as members...
