Because if it's not real it still serves the cause and gets people plugged in.

Possible, but again assuming Q is not real, Q could at any moment discredit the entire movement, and therefore completely discredit all of the research. And Trump, Flynn, and the Patriots would have no control over it. It would only make Trump and Flynn look bad if they knowingly acted aloof to something like that.
