Arpaio. I would say he defeated himself by being proud and stubborn. He was not by any means a universal hero around here, and all the things he did that worked, like Tent City and looking for illegals in the places they hang out, were areas that could be attacked by "advocates." The newspaper did so incessantly, especially after years of Joe being sued over everything, which cost the county over $1 million and no end in sight. Eventually Soros came along and mounted a version of BLM called Basta Ya! (enough already). That was before the machines and Joe lost to Penzone, Soros candidate. I think Arpaio was effective at rounding up bad guys and reducing recidivism, but he couldn't navigate the politics.
