I’ve read this in a few articles which makes me think it was put out by Melinda. Is the divorce a way for her to save her own ass and assets, or is it a fake divorce done to protect both of their assets (at least half of it)?

It's a way for Gates to invest in things without it being a conflict of interest. Same as the Bezos "divorce"
