I was just out of college and newly married during Carter's time. I remember the gas lines, high interest rates, and the Iran hostage crisis. This was not a good time for the country that's for sure.
I entered HS in 78-79. Gas lines, stagflation, my dad always worrying about if he would still have his job as an accountant at Ford the next day and Ted Koeppels Iran Hostage Crises Day 185 are indelibly printed in my memory.
My great grandfather died in February 1980 at 94 years old just as the Olympics began. He was a huge hockey fan as is my entire family. Mom let me leave the funeral home so I could watch the USA/USSR hockey game at my friends house with his dad. It was a Friday night.
Pregame my friends dad bad mouthed USA hockey and said we didnt have a chance after the 10-0 drubbing they gave us in NY a few days earlier. None of us realized that what we watched wasnt live and the USA had already beaten the Russians. That was the beginning of the USA USA chants. Reagan was in office and the world was full of promise once again. Grandpa would have loved that win.
On Sunday the USA played the Finns for the gold coming from behind once again. I was sick that day and was supposed to be skiing with my GF. She called wondering where I was and felt guilty when I told her why I wasnt there. I watched the game with grandpas son, my Uncle Bob, wrapped up in a blanket on the couch.
This stuff is like it happened yesterday. Funny how memory works. I cant remember what I did last Thursday.
Weird. Something just set me off. Maybe getting old, maybe its just my subconscious grasping for something familiar I once cherished. Difficult times for those of us who lived for decades knowing in the back of our minds that the politicians are all on the take but still a full throated American Patriot who knew, KNEW, that Americans would overcome everything and fix the bullshit.
I knew the left were criminals. I knew they lied to get elected. But I believed that we were all still Patriots. I couldnt fathom any scenario where the left became leftists. I couldnt imagine a time when the left wanted to destroy America.
I guess the signs were all there. I suppose the indoctrination worked to some extent. It kept me blind to the depths and prevalence of the evil.

Ahhh....don't you sometimes love those little trips down memory lane?

Anyway.
I hear and understand exactly what you are saying. I feel the same.
