Prosperity is what causes population growth to level off. The reason is similar. Fewer kids die, so no need to have so many. Can afford a tractor. Don't need 10 kids to help in the fields. Also, it takes time to prosper, only leaving time for busy parents to raise a couple kids instead of 10.

It's the exact opposite for me.

I have five kids. I keep thinking I'm done, but then I hit a certain milestone of prosperity and we realize we have the finances to afford another child.
