I think Prager's words are probably true in most big city schools, but less so in small town schools.
Maybe I am naive, but last time I went to graduation at our small Southern town school, the person chosen to speak, spoke openly about the importance of students keeping Jesus Christ at the center of their lives. The speech was not that different than one might hear during church service.
And I remember walking through the high school, and the gym area. I ran into the coach, who was a friend since high childhood, and I asked quietly, "Where are all the black students." He put his finder up to his lips as though to say, "shhh", as though he'd just as soon this fact not "stick out."
I think you're probably right, and thankfully so. But when you consider how many more people and students are in the big city schools compared to the small towns, the topic remains very concerning. I hope his advice gets to enough people to make a difference. We pulled our son from the public schools this past school year when they decided not to open. We put him in a Christian school where the staff are all conservative Trump-supporting Baptists. Our son flourished this past year like he never has before - now he's not only reading better, but playing piano and getting a better education (religious education as well) than he ever would have in the public schools. We are very fortunate to have found this school, it was honestly divine intervention. I saw a billboard (that the pastor of this church later told me was up longer than it was supposed to be by a week) on my way to work that advertised for this school and said "in person 5 days per week instruction" - which was all I needed - and I saw it at a time when I was in such despair, not knowing what we would do, as we had just learned the schools wouldn't open, the day care we used in summer had no capacity for school aged kids at the time, etc. It looked really bleak until I saw that billboard and called. Like a ray of light through dark clouds. The rest is history, but yeah that billboard wasn't even supposed to be there when I saw it, and the fact is that I drove that way every day but never paid attention to it until that day. Some don't believe that God has a plan, but when I experience things like that, I can't deny it.
Good for you. You child is very fortunate to have a parent that put their needs ahead of their own material wants. I am happy you son is doing well in his new school.
Thank you! He's actually very fortunate to have two parents who love him and don't mind driving older cars. We are blessed that my husband is such a good mechanic. It's not what he does for a living, but he's been working on cars from a very young age and it saves us a ton of money. We have no car payments, we don't have a lot of credit card debt, we don't live in a house we can't afford. We're not rich by any means, but we're comfortable and have what we need, as well as a few things we want (most of them go, "bang bang"). He's a happy kid. He has a shitty time in which to be growing up, it's so unfair to the kids who are having this pandemic and political fiasco as part of their childhood, but he seems to take it all in stride and find the positive things in life. I'm so thankful for that!
