We've really cozied up socially to our former oppressors in the UK while constantly haranguing the French for everything you can imagine. When it mattered, in our war for freedom, they had our backs.
Also, look at the recent history of the Middle East and you will see how the UK and USA have constantly made things worse, sometimes on purpose (UK is to blame for "Palestine") but France had the locals in line until they were overtaken by Germany in WW2 nd their ME colonies became free. We did have to save their asses, but that's another story...
Sorry to say that as a french but the war has been won by Russia mainly. You americans, came at the end of the war, in 1945. Hitler was already losing. You just came to give the last blow to the nazis. The time to save our asses, like you said, was 1939, not 1945. When the french marine came to your help you during your independence war, it was during the war, not at the end https://memory.loc.gov/intldl/fiahtml/fiatheme5a.html. But to be honest, it was done more to piss off the britishs than to help you.
Yeah, that's true about defeating Nazi Germany. I think part of the reason we came at the end is because we were also fighting in the Pacific theater against the Japanese and they lasted longer than the Nazis and were closer to home for us to fight.
I'm more talking about the beaches of Normandy which is considered a turning point in the war for the US, but I'm not sure how big that turning point was against what Russia did that led to that final push against Berlin. Russians were on our side in that war but their part is discreetly left out of American History because they're the bogeyman.
We did have to save their asses, but that's another story...
USA pretty much had to save everyone.
The Dutch Royal Family had to flee their own country when the Nazis came
Luxembourg and all its own government functions were abolished from July 1940, unlike occupied Belgium and the Netherlands which preserved their state functions under German control.
