I once knew a kid in the Navy named Moran. And he was a complete moron. We quickly adopted that name when calling out a moron, too.

The word play here applies the same logic.

Yes, it's deliberate. It's a thing on GLP where they take pride in misspelling. 'Get A Brian, Moran' is an often used insult. :)
