Doing a canvass does seem intrusive if it is "Did you really vote? Who did you vote for?" I would predict a lot of "fuck off, Jack" responses from suspicious people and complaints to the SoS/Sheriff from Dems about being threatened. A canvass of addresses looking for bogus ones is feasible.
Yes, I think real some people would wonder about who's asking. I think a lot of it, though, is looking for real addresses, PO Boxes, hotels, vacant lots with multiple residents, etc.

That sounds less intrusive than:
"Did you vote for Biden or Trump?"
"Are you with Antifa?"
