Fauci knew he was trapped right there with Rand Paul. He (Fauci) said something along the lines of "Dr Baric isn't carrying out Gain of Function research, but if he was he would be following the guidelines............etc etc" So Fauci covered his ass knowing all what had gone on, his answer was such that he couldn't be accused of lying.
