I wish I could have done this when I was younger. I knew what I wanted to do after I sat in front of a TRS80 Model 1 for the first time when I was 7 years old.
Public schools have no desire to play to kids' strength though ... back when I was a tot, the elementary schools were a bit more sane ... they were still concerned about reading, writing, and arithmetic.
However, once the idiot hormones kick in, schools should start playing to kid's strengths instead of making them suffer through a bunch of trash-garbage nonsense. For example, I, to this day, get absolutely NOTHING out of reading classical literature (some nonfiction I enjoy, but the fiction stuff ... boring).
I know many are works of art and all of that jazz, but I flat out don't get it. I don't want to get it frankly ... it's a total snoozefest to me. However, I spent more hours wasting my time reading it, writing papers on it basically telling teachers what they wanted to hear, and moved on to the next boring waste of time to repeat the same boring, stupid process.
Total time spent in the classroom on computers : 4 months maybe. I had an elective class. It bored me to fucking tears since I had mastered the basics of programming by the time I was 10 (loops, condition statements, subroutines, hell, even some 6809 and 6502 assembly). It was all in Pascal. It only got interesting towards the very end when we FINALLY touched on things like pointers, data structures and other stuff that was relatively new to me.
The liberal cunt that taught it, and she was a liberal cunt, was a bitch that hated my guts because I didn't look or act like the typical nerds she enjoyed terrorizing. Believe me, I was an UBER nerd, but I don't like being treated like shit by a teacher, and never really cared if I were to fail or get thrown out. School was a boring waste of time to me. I made sure I would reciprocate her sentiment by arguing with her constantly and getting thrown out of her class for no reason other than frustrating the living fuck out of her.
The best was when she accused me of cheating. I got back an assignment from the bitch with a big fucking zero. She held it up to the class, insulted me, and asked me who I copied the assignment from since I was NEVER in "her" lab. I could have been rational and explained how I pulled things off like that, but Ms. Permanent Menopause didn't earn any respect from moi ... I asked her if it was "really fucking necessary" to hold that assignment up.
I was thrown out, sent to the Principal's office, and had Mr. Tomato Face all riled up since he thought he finally caught me doing something bad (that fucker was human trash as well ... had me written off as a drug user since I had long hair ... asshole). I explained to the career slob that I had a computer at home, copied the compiler and other stuff I needed, worked on everything there since I fucking hated green screen monitors (everything would look pink to me after sitting in front of one of those things for an hour), and would be willing to take any test or assignment the cunt threw at me and ace it. My reward for defending myself, with evidence mind you, was 5 days in school suspension for the profanity. The kicker was that the zero remained ... I still didn't work in "her" lab after that, but never was accused of cheating again.
That was my worst experience. There were other times I lost it with those dipshits, but that one with that cunt was the absolute worst. I hate to admit it, but I get pissed about it to this day. I went on to get a masters in ECE ... that lousy piece of shit cunt would probably think that she had a role in that achievement.
Anyway, I fucking HATE public schools for the most part. They're even worse now. I graduated right when physics classes (all science classes actually) were required to talk about environmental issues. How that shit pertained to physics was beyond me, but I am preaching to the choir here bringing it up. I remember one Friday where the moron teaching the class rambled on about chlorofluorocarbons for almost an hour ... pretty much had most convinced that styrofoam was going to end the planet before the sun expands and consumes it. I fell asleep.
I saw what my step son went through ... it made me want to puke. They do NOTHING but cripple kids by filling their heads with 90% completely useless garbage and maybe 10% useful stuff. What a waste of the prime learning years when your brain is basically a sponge.
I can understand why they want the schools set up the way they are ... they're after some kind of bullshit, broad background nonsense that is only useful to people that want to make a career out of appearing on Jeopardy. I guess colleges look for that too, but I think the fact that the USA plummeted in its standings worldwide after the DoE got its filthy hands on the nation's schools and instituted this policy tells you everything you need to know about their philosophy. These days, they seem to only care about the top 10 in the class and what colleges they are going to. The rest are basically ignored. I could see it when I was fucking 15 years old and was more than likely my first 'real' redpill.
The school district I am in now is outstanding ... my son absolutely loves it ... however, as more and more liberal shitstains flee their destroyed towns and move here, I fear they'll eventually wreck the school district. I will do my best to stop that from happening ... there is no way our schools can continue as they are and expect this country to be even remotely successful in the future.
I hope this kid starts a movement. Life is too short to be bored to death during some of the best years you'll experience on this planet. If the current system worked for you, that's great ... however, I wouldn't be shocked in the least to learn that 75% of kids in this country saw their potential wasted by our public school system.
Sorry for the long post. I want these public schools to be cleansed of all of the liberal bullshit that wrecked them.
You sound much like my own children, who were removed from public school and homeschooled. Our library alone put to shame the school library, and our children were used to being able to read/study any subject without leaving home.
The school they attended was built with NO provision for a library, so a small one was carved out of locker room space. Children were allowed to read only books in their age group. Since our children read from long before school, there was no incentive to waste any more of their time, so we left.

I have never regretted our decision.
