When you look up any other city it doesn't include the "state" name with the city so I don't know why D.C. needs to be included just because it's Washington D.C.
I think people are used to adding DC when speaking of Washington as it is a simple way to differentiate from the state of Washington. If you are looking at a map you already know you aren't looking at Washington state.
Wrong. It has ALWAYS been either Washington D.C., or D.C. Just plain Washington has always referred to the state.
Occasionally some reporters called it Washington, but that was always a fopaw, and they eventually changed it for clarification and accuracy. Few acceptions allowed (Washington press Corp, was changed to DC press corp)
One of the reasons they have always added it, as you said, but also is the proper name. DC is not Washington. It is Washington D.C.
