I thought Que=what and mala or malo=bad or evil...

Actually, more correctly, "Que mala" means "how unfortunate" or "what bad luck". Spanish takes on different meaning depending on where you are at - I live about 50 miles from El Paso so the lingo here is pretty much the same.
