She's inherently lazy about everything and taking a shortcut to the border on her way home is characteristic of who she is. I honestly believe she knows she's not the vp and doesn't want the bother of playing the part for the short time it will be. Most smart ambitious people would make the most of a bad situation to demonstrate that they can rise to the challenge in hopes of eventually landing on their feet in a better place.
