I had to stop watching hockey in person or in large groups. It wasn't the game that I disliked ... in fact I love it (still do, but I cannot support the NHL ... not after their hard turn to the left which seemed to coincide with a lot of taxpayer money they received for new arenas all over the continent ... to each their own though).
The fans are another story. These days, my knee jerk reaction when anyone says "Shoot the puck" is to find the nearest brick and hurl it in the general direction of the idiot that says it. Maybe I need about 5 more IQ points to hit that level where it won't bother me :-) ... I was 135 last I checked ... maybe that's just under the threshold where you can block out commentary from other fans and enjoy the game :-).
I tried explaining why hockey players do the things they do on ice ... especially on power plays. Explanations falls on deaf ears. One time I had to explain why they shouldn't charge the net on a two man power play. I was told that I didn't know what I was fucking talking about. People fail to realize how good pro hockey players are ... if you mindlessly rush the net trying to score a cheap goal, you have a substantially higher probability of giving up a shorthanded goal should that puck fall into the hands of a player that's lying back and waiting for a puck to dribble his way ... the offense will almost always have the upper hand when it comes to a one-on-one breakaway ... I don't care if in-their-prime Patrick Roy or Martin Brodeur is in net ... its fucking stupid to just shoot blindly and charge towards the goal since a stupid mistake will cost you ... the sport isn't fucking retarded like NFL football.
Finally, people think they have to yell all sorts of crap during games. If the team loses, they always default to "why weren't they shooting the puck". If the team is winning, they still yell shoot the puck. If the team had no fucking arms, they'd still yell shoot the puck. It's akin screaming "throw the ball" at a pitcher.
I have no idea why I let that drive me crazy. Maybe it's autism or something. I told a friend I work with about it ... now all I hear is "shoot the puck" ... one of these days a brick is going to go flying out of his monitor and into his face somehow :-) .

We might agree to differ slightly on this philosophical question. After half a century of watching and playing hockey, I've concluded that very seldom do bad things happen when you shoot the puck. It's consistently the best default option, and the maddening hesitancy to shoot that sends fans over the edge can reveal lack of confidence, too much fear of a goalie's ability, getting too cute Trying to Make the Perfect Pass, or being too unselfish. Shooting creates rebounds, deflections to an open teammate, tip-ins, defensive disarray and scrambling, goalie out of position....or the puck might even go in!
In other words, when in doubt, young players out there,....
shoot the puck :)
