I have no problem with setting up events and spaces in minimum or medium security prisons so kids can feel comfortable keeping in contact with parents.
The best ways to prevent criminals from re-offending is to strengthen the family ties. If the parents are on good behavior, there is no reason why they can't have a planned BBQ or pizza party with their kids in a safe area of the prison. There isn't any reason why they can't have a simple space to re-connect with the family.
Prison reform = REFORM. That means giving people opportunities to make changes in their lives. If there is proper supervision, common sense involved... there is no reason why prisoners can't enjoy a picnic in a park setting with family within the prison grounds. There is no reason why the prison can't sponsor a simple cookout, where prisoners BBQ or cook out for family visitors.
In the same manner, there is no reason why prisoners shouldn't help in rehabilitating abused animals, which is another way of teaching responsibility and caring for others.
We don't want to raise a generation of hatred, nor do we want to release prisoners who have isolated themselves from their own families. Use common sense. Not everything has to be cold concrete and iron bars.

Upon further reflection you're right. We're not talking maximum security here. Most people behind bars are going to be released. The whole prison system is an American tragedy and needs to be reformed. I'm fortunate enough to have never been involved with the prison system, but a friend of mine did spend some time in prison for a non violent crime when he was younger. He's one of the most decent people I know and I trust him implicitly. He said "the reason they have prisons is because there are some really bad people." I'm not against punishment at all, but for those reading this and saying no mercy, remember these guys (and women) will be released and need to be treated as you would wish to be treated in their situation.
Prison, child-friendly and party do not belong in the same sentence. Ever.
Taxpayers pay too much already for food and housing for these offenders - I say bring back some manual labor (go ahead and downvote, IDGAF) to offset the cost and pay back society instead of taking from and poisoning it.
