There will be no unity with people who think all white people need to pay for crimes committed by other white/black people.
It is a terrible thing that happened but the only way to heal is to move forward, not wallow in the past. It cannot be changed, apologies are lip service and mean nothing.
If I were a victim of continuous physical, mental and sexual abuse throughout my life, I would never heal by visiting/reliving the past and an apology for it is short of an immense effrontery.
Heal and be at peace or leave and hate us forever.
The phrase "don't dwell on the past" was never properly imparted on these people, because a past that isn't theirs somehow entitles them to be lords and masters over other people for a past that isn't theirs.
There is no divide that is wider, and this divide is insurmountable. Not necessarily because we couldn't bridge that divide, but because we don't want to.
