It is about click harvesting. More clicks generate more ad revenue. In every article there are ‘sponsored stories’, these are served by a content powered network (Taboola for example).
The business model requires scale as the ad rates are quite minuscule so, some form of distribution deals are necessary. E.g. search engine / home page defaults on installed software, or carrier service, bundling with ISPs, you get the idea.
These ‘journalists’, their job is to dream up content 24/7 (global operation), aka Buzfeed.
The majority of them are just NPCs, but there are those who are installed. They ‘know’ how to manufacture propaganda.
