One thing that struck me in this story is how bloody tough boys, men, and even women were back then. The mamby pamby boys we got today are a sorry Lott.
Also tell of Davy's being told first had of the New Madrid quake.

That someone so unschooled could speak so plainly, yet understandable, and from a such a plain sense of justice, and honesty, is a person of such a rare nature, that we instantly see the quality that made Davy Crockett so admired.

They were all so nondomesticated. From what I have read it was like every time urban life encroached - they split.
