You're right. You can store diesel long term, but not gas.
You can store gas long term if you put a stabilizer in it. Seafoam is cheap and works wonders.
I have 55 gallons of diesel in a drum long term, gas I have in several cans that I rotate as i use it for lawnmowers, generators and such, all stabilized and have used gas that was 2 years old "properly stored"
