To see the brake pedal depressed, take its kids.
I've never been good with where and when you put an apostrophe
It's is a contraction for "it is" or "it has"
"It's been a long day."
"It's hot outside."
Its is the possessive form that denotes ownership of a nonperson.
"Its food bowl needs to be refilled."
"Its vote was for a Democrat."
It confuses people because apostrophes also signal possession when coupled with a noun.
"Mark's vote was switched to Democrat by Dominion's voting machine."
There was a Canadian educational youth show called Street Cents back in the day that once called out the NBA for writing "the NBA and it's players..." in a TV ad. This was like 25 years ago but it always stuck with me..
So doesn't matter if you act like it is a person?
Like "my brother's"?
Thank you for helping, genuinely.
Brother is a noun, so that works. Yeap!
The main times a possessive do not get an apostrophe to show ownership is with pronouns. So you don't put an apostrophe with:
His
Hers
Its
Their
I see, so not names either? I need to brush up on grammar and such, here I come khan academy. Haha
Thanks again, fren. I appreciate that and you
"Its" is one of those many exceptions to the rule that English has. Here the possessive form doesn't use the apostrophe to avoid the confusion with "it is".
Interesting, English is so unusual haha. Its the only language I know and I still mess up
I think those of us for whom English is is the first language are fortunate. Most other languages are relatively easy by comparison.
I have to agree, I think it is mandarin that is close to English in difficulty or am I remembering incorrectly?
Well, you spelled it perfectly. Don't beat yourself up.
Thanks, appreciate that. Is good to try get better though
