The Civil War was about States rights but the right they were fighting to keep was slavery. So in addition to other economic reasons it was and it wasnt about slavery. At least at the highest levels of Federal and State Government.
As for the soldiers, they fought for their States regardless if they were personally for or against slavery. The People at that time had a much closer bond to the State than the Feds. Lee was against slavery but he couldnt fight against Virginia and their right to make their own decisions as laid out in the Constitution.
With the Emancipation Proclamation, Lincoln made it wholly about slavery in the publics mind and shut down newspapers and jailed journalists who disagreed with him. He even suspended the right to Habeas Corpus in response.
Ive often asked myself if Lincoln saved or destroyed this Nation. Maybe its both. He definitely laid the framework to run roughshod over the Constitution. I do not fault Lincoln though, what he did wasnt through malice and if he had lived maybe he would have set a better path for the future. Complicated business.
Partially true. Before the war, the northern states tried to sign an agreement solidifying slavery in the future, and that was still not enough to prevent the civil war.
You are trying to pin down the details of a story that has been told looking backwards. A narrative that some have attempted to commandeer for political ends.
The reality of the tensions leading to the War Between the States were more complex than most 'academic' folks have been willing to admit.

So people died fighting for the 4% of other people to own slaves?
