robert e lee never owned a slave. most of the confederate army didnt own slaves. the civil war was fought over the government being too powerful and controlling the states
About 4% of American families ever owned slaves of any color
Some slaveowners were black
Some slaves were white
Throughout history white people have been slaves
The entire thing is bullshit as this quote proves:
"We must realize that our party's most powerful weapon is racial tension. By propounding into the consciousness of the dark races that for centuries they have been oppressed by the whites, we can mold them to the program of the Communist Party. In America we will aim for subtle victory. While inflaming the Negro minority against the whites, we will endeavor to install in the whites a guilt complex for their exploitation of the Negroes. We will aid the Negroes to rise in prominence in every walk of life, in the professions and in the world of sports and entertainment. With this prestige, the Negro will be able to intermarry with the whites and begin a process which will deliver America to our cause." (Israel Cohen, a Jew, A Racial Program For The 20th Century (1912) quoted by Congressman Abernathy, Congressional Record (1957), p. 8559)
The Civil War was about States rights but the right they were fighting to keep was slavery. So in addition to other economic reasons it was and it wasnt about slavery. At least at the highest levels of Federal and State Government.
As for the soldiers, they fought for their States regardless if they were personally for or against slavery. The People at that time had a much closer bond to the State than the Feds. Lee was against slavery but he couldnt fight against Virginia and their right to make their own decisions as laid out in the Constitution.
With the Emancipation Proclamation, Lincoln made it wholly about slavery in the publics mind and shut down newspapers and jailed journalists who disagreed with him. He even suspended the right to Habeas Corpus in response.
Ive often asked myself if Lincoln saved or destroyed this Nation. Maybe its both. He definitely laid the framework to run roughshod over the Constitution. I do not fault Lincoln though, what he did wasnt through malice and if he had lived maybe he would have set a better path for the future. Complicated business.
Partially true. Before the war, the northern states tried to sign an agreement solidifying slavery in the future, and that was still not enough to prevent the civil war.
You are trying to pin down the details of a story that has been told looking backwards. A narrative that some have attempted to commandeer for political ends.
The reality of the tensions leading to the War Between the States were more complex than most 'academic' folks have been willing to admit.
Best theory I've seen involving the true reason behind Our Civil War was the DS' third attempt to return us to the bri'ish crown after the War of 1812 failed miserably. Once they found we would not return through bloodshed alone, then we have the Reconstruction Compromise and WW's Fed bullshit.

Who owned the slave ships?
Who owned the auction houses?

So people died fighting for the 4% of other people to own slaves?

The seventy-year term of the loans from the founding were ending and needed to be renewed.
The same theme as the next one.
