Special Forces aren't Green Berets. Green Berets are Rangers. Army Special Forces are SFO-D, aka "Delta Force." Delta guys have BOTH th Dad anger Tab AND the Special Forces Tab on their uniforms. You earn the Green Beret by finishing Ranger School. You earn the Special Forces Tab by completing the "Q Course."
There is a VWRY BIG DIFFERENCE between Rangers and SFO-D. SFO+D is by INVITATION ONLY. Any Soldier, even a cook, can go to Ranger School.
Yes, Rangers operate under the U.S. Central Command's "Special Forces" designate. BUT, they are a dime a dozen in th Sp cial Forces community. Rangers get sent in when a situation arises that dictates needing a force that isn't in the Regular Army's tool bag. SFO-D are the equivalent of the Navy SeALs and Marine Force Recon/Scout Snipers. Rangers are the equivalent to USMC Infantry.
I served as Navy EOD under USCENTCOM with EOD Unit 2. As such, we are a Special Forces Unit. We get called in when ordnance ops are too tough for the Army EOD guys to handle, and we also run ops with the SeALs. We do their demo work. We also do the Ranger's demo work and Delta's, too. I worked with plenty of SeALs and Delta guys on ops and never once went on ops with the Rangers. Why? Because those guys are Tier 3 operators. They're "elite," meaning they're better trained than th Regular Army and can do some things that Regular Army can't, and yes, they are considered force multipliers, but the main function of the Rangers is also to train other foreign armies. That's what they excel at.
Yes, we used them a lot in Afghanistan, mainly because of the terrain difficulties. They have training that the Regular Army simply can't do because of logistics and cost.
But, they are bottom of the barrel when it comes to "Special Forces" units. That's why there's over 25,000 of them. I know plenty of Rangers that would cry home to Mommy and Daddy about how tough Navy EOD School is, let alone BUD/S, or the Q Course. 80-90% of those guys wouldn't make it to Hell Week at BUD/S, EOD, or even SWCC School. And that's only 5 weeks in. Btw, Ranger School is only 5 weeks. Their version of Hell Week is roughly 56-72 hrs, depending on weather and the Instructor's attitude.
Now, don't get me wrong, they're a great force to have when you need things done that your regular Army can't do. And they are considered force multipliers. But that's where the similarity stops. In the Special Forces Community, they're considered Regular Army guys.
