Remember though that, with great power comes great responsibility.
In Texas, it's not uncommon to have several handguns, at least a few shotguns and a rifle or two in the house. People do concealed carry, have weapons in their vehicles or have loaded guns for home protection.
The responsibility is ensuring that you have full control over the guns, that everyone in the family respects them and learns how to use the guns safely and that you don't put people in harms way. Also, you have to be very responsible about ever using the gun.
Even in Texas, where we are allowed to defend our property using deadly force, particularly after dark, you are fully responsible for everything that happens. You will be held accountable, even though you acted within your rights. The important thing is that you use minimal force to get the job done and get the situation under control. You have to be aware of other people and any potential problems at all times.
Having the 2nd amendment is a blessing, but the right to bear arms has to be respected. Like with anything, power in the hands of someone taught to control it can be a good thing. Power in the hands of an untrained person is a disaster waiting to happen. I really wish Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand would smarten up about guns rather than simply banning them.
