My closest weapon is on my hip and condition 1...ALWAYS.
Otherwise what good is it?

In this day & age, you're right. I kept them separate because of the kids. I could always lock & load in a second or two. Now, my kids are grown, youngest is 19, they know gun safety and can shoot, and we might have to draw on short notice.
