This particular chat (7:15 one) did require people to be subscribed to the channel in order to chat—not to watch, though, obviously—but is the only one in which that has ever been required. More importantly, the merch range is automatically generated by Spreadshirt, the parent website, where one can create custom designs for almost any apparel that you can think of. This would mean applying a single visual design to a range of apparel, including masks for both children and adults. If there were 30 varieties of apparel and 5 different designs, you can easily get to 150 individual designs.
And if one is a little careless, their design might end up on a child's mask, which GN might not even be aware of.
Edit: It's a little bit like the Paper.li thing. They use the platform without really worrying about the code it uses or what it's doing at the granular level, only that it provides the service. Paper.li provided the website as a Content Management System (CMS). Spreadshirt provided the CMS for merch. GN might pick and choose some features and packages but their primary concern here was to create a merch platform to occupy the merch market, and displace any GN imposters from that market.
