The chimney in the Auschwitz "chamber" only reached to the 2nd storey, it was right next to the building that housed officers and an infirmary! To prevent the gas spreading far and wide, the chimneys would have to have been very tall - no such structures appeared on the reconnaissance photos taken by Allied aircrews.
