Easy as it is to paint your opponents as one-dimensional villians, I imagine most of them have convinced themselves that it's "for the greater good."
Couple that with the apparent desensitization of living in a major city...
Democrats are pretty much one dimensional
One of the reasons the Democrats lost in 2016 is they underestimated the support Trump had. One of the reasons Trump "lost*" in 2020 is because we all underestimated the lengths they would go to get rid of him.
And you'd be shocked what people can rationalize doing in the name of "the greater good."
Example: In spite of being categorically wrong at almost every turn, Karl marx believed that any pain and suffering caused by the workers revolutions he advocated for would be overshadowed by the utopian paradise that he believed could be created once the bloodshed was complete.
Gengis Khan sacked most of Asia and a good chunk of eastern Europe in the name of improving his own people's lot in life.
Native Americans routinely raided European settlements for food and supplies, and in some cases to drive off invaders.
I'm not saying any of these examples were or weren't justified, mind you. I'm just saying assuming someone is a one dimensional Bond Villian if they don't agree with you is how we got to this point in the first place, because that's exactly how they view us.
