Okay, the only context I have for "White Hat" is hacker terminology, where it represents a "good" hacker, or at the very least a "benevolent" one.

Can someone explain how that got twisted in this case? lol

The simplest explanation I've heard was that in westerns the good guy would have a white hat and the bad guy would have a black hat.
