The way it used to work before the federal reserve abolished the gold standard and made the federal reserve note the global standard allowing them to print money at will and control the value of everything.

It would take me hours to explain the economics behind the gold standard. Peter Schiff does a great job of explaining this if you look him up on youtube.

Just search: Peter Schiff gold standard and you should find a good explanation.
