And Affirmative Action backing scholarships. I had good grades in high school. I was involved in extracurriculars. Edited the newspaper. School plays. Held down a part-time job.
But I was a white guy with parents that made a comfortable living. I could hardly get a dime in scholarship money, and my parents weren't forking over for my education. My dad wanted a corvette instead.
Wow! I had a similar experience, the only difference being that my folks felt if their kids wanted a college education, the kids should pay for it. Fortunately, I attended college long enough ago that tuition was reasonable ($100 per term or semester), so I could pay for most of it with part-time jobs and a frugal lifestyle, and only had to borrow $2000.
Wow. Yeah, by the time I was in school, it was $7000 a semester. And the best job I could get was around $6 an hour. My parents couldn't figure out why I couldn't just work my way through school.
