The tetanus thing is really only a risk if you get soil from the earth into a cut and fail to wash it out promptly. A clean cut absent debris that could contain the bacteria is of no risk at all.
In the US there are about 30 cases per year, almost all of which have not been vaccinated
So the vaccine is not perfect in anycase, and is a blanket protection for a very very rare condition. About 10% of cases are serious enough to lead to death, but again one would expect that to apply to those with pre-existing complicating factors. The immune system deals with 90% of those cases that do occur.
Not "soil", it's caused by toxins in cow/horse/pig manure which was what brings on the dis-ease known as "tetanus".
No bacteria are contagious/infectious/dis-ease causing.
My understanding is it's a bacteria, that releases a toxin. It isn't contagious/transmissible person to person as you say, but it is 'infectious' by mechanical insertion under the skin by trauma. Then the toxin is released by the bacteria..
Precisely correct. The best word to use is "Putrefied" matter/tissue, which is the end result of some bacterial decay.
Technically speaking, anything entering our pristine bloodstream through broken skin qualifies as "toxic".
The "putrefied toxin" is already present on the foot of the person that steps on the "rusty nail" --- the nail just pushes it deep into the sterile environment and bloodstream.
It has to be a deep puncture wound. Pretty sure your basic open wound in the open air won't get you tatanus, and more likely from manure than soil
