What kind of human being could participate in that raid? At some point before dragging the war hero away wouldn't you think "WTF am I doing? Is this the person I want to be?"

One must realize that MANY people do not think, act or live like "normal" persons and that many of those persons intentionally seek out positions that allow them to exercise control over others. Those are the types of persons who'd be ok with, or even enjoy, participating in that raid.
