My husband and I are traveling to Mexico in 2 weeks and will have to have our very first PCR test done since this whole thing started, to get back into the US. My husband is super nervous about it because he’s read about how bad the tests are for you. I am just trusting God for protection that it will not cause us any harm. Plus, like you said, I would imagine that having one test is not enough exposure to do anything anyway. I know people who have had to be tested weekly for months and I would imagine that would be much worse.
It depends on the nurse who is giving you the test for how bad it might feel. For my brother who got it at the same time as me from the same nurse, she shoved it way up his nose and it bothered him for a few days, but then she came to me and it didn't go as far. The best thing to do is to keep your mouth open and breathe that way, close your eyes and count to 10 or 15, it doesn't take longer than that. It's horrible that we even have to go through with this though.
