The grapes are an analogy of Gods enemy.

The 'grapes of wrath' (Gods wrath)

Remember, the meek arent appointed Gods wrath.

Crushing the grapes symbolizes their blood bring spilt in a greusome way.

It happened in 70ad during the destruction of the temple, that culminated in the end of their age.

I wouldn't be surprised if it happens again, as we near the end of our age.

Maybe it's a 'graduation' ceremony of sorts that happens every 2k or so years and it's pass or fail.
