It should be illegal to own a home that you are not either currently living in, or do not live in it at least one month out of the year, without having to list it as for rent, without having to pay fines for depriving others of housing.

If you want to understand how the middle class is being screwed, research the Fed. What you suggest here is socialism which is disturbing to see here of all places.
Certain degrees of socialist programs within a prosperous society can be a good thing when it comes to taking care of the less fortunate, ill, and elderly. The problem is when the policies that are designed to do that hurt the most productive members of society and especially when whoever is in charge of those programs has a hidden agenda.

Empty vacation homes that are owned by corporate pharmacy executives sometimes get burnt down.
